Week 5: Cultivating Compassion in the Classroom
According to GreaterGood.Berkely.Edu article, 'Compassion literally means “to suffer together” and is defined as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering.'
It states that "while empathy refers more generally to our ability to take the perspective of and feel the emotions of another person, compassion is when those feelings and thoughts include the desire to help."
In the lessons that follow, you will be introduced to 5 games curated to cultivate compassion in the classroom.
In the acting world, empathy is a skill that helps actors connect to their characters and the characters in a story. We use games to help identify and explore emotions, and express them.
In the classroom, the games I gathered promotes empathy as a precursor to deeper conversations around compassion. Consider including in your classroom mission statement practicing compassion and use the games to encourage the students to design ways to do that inside and outside the classroom.
